AutoCal vs. Bench Flash: What’s The Difference?

Both AutoCal and bench flashing get a new calibration onto your ECM — the difference is where the work happens, and that changes what's practical for your situation.

What AutoCal Does

EFI Live's AutoCal is a handheld device that flashes your calibration through the OBD port, without pulling the ECM out of the truck. Once you have the device, revisions can often be sent to you remotely and loaded yourself in minutes — which is why it's the backbone of a lot of remote tuning relationships.

What Bench Flashing Does

Bench flashing means the ECM (and sometimes TCM) comes out of the truck and connects directly to a bench harness for programming. It's the standard approach for platforms or years that AutoCal and EZ Lynk don't support, and for some deeper-level calibration work that OBD-port flashing can't reach.

Which One Fits Your Truck

Newer, EZ Lynk or EFI Live-supported platforms usually make the most sense with AutoCal or remote AutoAgent tuning — less downtime, and revisions are simple going forward. Older or unsupported platforms, or trucks needing HP Tuners-specific work, are where bench flashing comes in.
